About St. Viator

School Ideal

 Development Goals

1. Core value: Carry forward Jesus’ Love and Honor St. Viator
(1) Instead of “merit”, people become great or respectful because of “love”. We hope that every member of St. Viator can carry forward Jesus’s love by practicing it in their daily lives and making contributions to the happiness and joy of others.
(2) When every member of St. Viator can “love others from love” at their cores and earn social recognition for St. Viator with their acts, it is the success, joy, and honor of our education.

2. School Motto: Faithfulness and Commitment
(1) Faithfulness: Self-discipline enables true self-reflection and treating people with sincerity.
(2) Commitment: Doing our best with commitment and treating people with respect.

3. Vision: (for all staff and students)
(1) Service spirit: Cultivating enthusiasm for service by modeling Jesus’s ideal of service.
(2) Noble morality: Cultivating good character and sentiment through character education and discipline.
(3) Voluntary learning: Motivating students to learn voluntarily to establish competency for work in society.
(4) Enterprising spirit: Preparing students to be aggressive and enterprising in study and conduct to develop correct life values.
(5) Responsible attitude: Be strict with one, planning everything before acting, be accountable and responsible.

4. Five Major Goals of the Principal

(I) Holistic education

In addition to promoting educational excellence, cultivating future elites with “physical and mental health, great character, and outstanding ability” and turning students into talented members of different fields in society with what they have learned and are capable of is the “student-centered” modern education ideal.

1. Veritas: Pursue truth (veritas) and identify truth and falsehood.
Teachers discipline and teach seriously. Students learn diligently. As knowledge accumulates, intelligence develops for students to correctly judge truth and falsehood and to pursue and safeguard veritas.
2. Benevolent: Practice “benevolence” and disseminate kindness.
Motivated by the love of Jesus, teachers and students serve others in “true enthusiasm and good character” to spread love and always perform good deeds ahead of others.
3. Pulchritude: Cultivate the sense of “beauty” for students to taste life.
By equipping teachers and students with the ability to appreciate beautiful things and establishing correct values toward life, they can overcome the influence of materialism and enjoy the true fun of life.
4. Sanctities: Follow the example of saints to make life full.
Follow the deeds and examples of saints to acquire the skills of self-discipline and practice and implement them in daily life so as to feel at ease and justified, unrestrained and whole.

(II) Warm campus

The aim of building a “warm, friendly and safe” campus that touches and is beloved by parents, teachers and students is to form the school commitment of teachers and students, and this must be achieved through the full coordination of “hardware and software”. To only have the latest and the best hardware equipment without purifying the souls of teachers and students (e.g. respect for teachers, love for the school, value everything, service, etc.), everything is in vain.

1. Spiritual warmth, safety, and shelter
Building an environment with “care and warmth, thoughtfulness and concerns, and positive education” with parents and teachers together can disseminate warmth to all parts of the campus. By “treating students as children” and demonstrating their expertise, staff members enable students to feel “respect, love, help, and accompaniment”, the very senses of safety.

2. Safety and security measures in daily life
(1) Software
From concept communication to real action, from parent-teacher cooperation to “family counseling”, a tightly planned network emphasizing “care for students” is established for adults to grow and optimize while educating and counseling students.
(2) Hardware
Inspection and reporting of all areas with teacher and student activities (e.g. classrooms, laboratory, sports grounds, student halls, etc.) at all times to put safety first and maintain, renew, and build as much as possible.

(III) Love and service

Carry forward the “servant concept” of Catholicism and enforce it in the daily lives of teachers and students. We “give and take” in our life. If we have more to serve others, it is a blessing. As Laozi said, “...Having bestowed all he has on others, he has yet more…” (Daodejing: 81). Literally, it means we will get more after giving more to others. This is the characteristic and true value of “love”.

1. Love: the source of the force of life
(1) Parents trust the school and the school helps parents.
(2) Teachers care about students and students respect teachers.
(3) Mutual help and mutual support among parents, teachers, and students.
(4) Start with loving one so as to “love your family, your class, your school, society, and the earth.”

2. Service: Let serving others be the goal of life
(1) On-campus: From class service to campus service, spare no effort to support charity sales, sponsoring, and human resource support.
(2) Off-campus: Actively get involved in care for remote areas and the underprivileged and be devoted to community and public service without reservation.

(IV) Multiple learning

Building vision and developing characteristics: Instead of striving “to be the first”, creating “uniqueness” (with unique features) in education. Therefore, “diversification, innovation, research, and development of curriculum and instruction” are the foci of the instruction team. By encouraging teachers and students to teach and learn effectively, students can learn comprehensively and develop adaptability to future environmental changes. Students should not be coached to take examinations. Instead of weakening students’ abilities, lively and diversified curriculum and activity designs can improve and stimulate their potential, learning ability, and competitiveness.

1. Exploration
(1) Establish the correct concept for multiple developments and eliminate the issue of credentialism in society and tradition.
(2) Design courses for multiple and adaptive development for students to correspond to and explore individual fields and faculties.

2. Contact
(1) Arrange and introduce courses relating to multiple and adaptive development for students to make career plans.
(2) Plan visits, presentations and talks for students to better understand multiple and adaptive development through real involvement.

3. Understanding
(1) Enable students to understand the meaning and importance of multiple and adaptive development through class activities and seminars.
(2) Enable students to know and use channels for obtaining information relating to multiple and adaptive development.

4. Choice
(1) Enable students to make the best choice for their future study after understanding more about multiple and adaptive development.
(2) Encourage students not to regret their choices, but instead do their best for their goals, because when there are choices, there is risk.

(V) Self-development of teaching expertise

It is the leader’s responsibility to lead both administrative and teaching staff to make “innovation and performance” in school operations. It is thus necessary to encourage staff to voluntarily undergo continual education so as to make progress and optimization in professional competencies to cope with the constantly changing environment. In addition, by integrating the human resources of the administration, teachers, parents, and communities, we seek co-progress and co-prosperity. In the administration, humane leadership is implemented with a focus on efficiency, communication, interaction, and harmony so as to pursue sustainable operations through progressive action.

1. Ideal: Ideals determine attitude, attitude determines behavior, and behavior determines final outcomes. All staff should bear a spirit of lifelong learning to pursue optimization and growth in their professional competencies.

2. Action: Staff should keep reviewing their work and make constant corrections, so as to make plans more elaborate and strategies more mature to achieve their anticipated goals. Team cooperation and team spirit are equally important for improving one’s overall image and effectiveness.

3. Empowerment: As we shall reap what have sown, those who work hard will impress others. Visits, conferences, training activities, organization workshops, and professional learning groups are organized for staff to pursue growth in all directions so as to cope with the constantly changing world.

4. Performance
(1) Routine supervisions and reviews are reinforced for the reference of business and activity performance evaluation in the future.
(2) Staff members are encouraged to take in-service professional training after work to improve personal and team capabilities.

Sustainable Operations and St. Viator Features

1. Upholding basic faith and values
Regardless of the times and changes, the founding aim of St. Viator will never change. Cleverly blending evangelical works with the lives, learning and activities of students and increase the human resources and improve the function of the Religious Counseling Office.

2. Pursing continual growth upon tradition
However deep the foundation is, we should keep going! Like both sides of the same coin, “tradition” is an advantage and a burden at the same time. The experience of ancestors is valuable, but if we keep clinging to it, we will never make progress. Similarly, teachers should adjust, change, and even innovate on their teaching methods based on the needs of students. Therefore, there is still space for improvement for the teaching team of St. Viator. If we want progress, we need to develop encouragement plans and actively promote “personal competency growth” and “teaching team cooperation”.

Performance in “Life Management and Academic Elitism”

1. Closely combining life with learning
Life management and academic excellence neither contradict nor conflict with one another. Conversely, they complement each other. In my personal experience, strict and impartial life management, being patient in explaining to students, and cleverly interacting with them with affection can help maintain orderly class management, encourage students to study, and thereby improve student performance.

2. Class advisor responsibility system
As long as a class is well managed, many problems can be easily solved. Therefore, the class advisor plays an important role. The dean of student affairs supervising and administrative staff assisting class advisors should carry out their duties with due diligence so as to demonstrate the synergy of teamwork.

3. Neither monopolizing nor hoarding
However, class advisors should not overprotect their students and keep others (such as course teachers and administrative staff) away. They should work together to manage the class and control the teaching situation.

4. Building a closely connected network
In addition, we should never overlook the influence of course teachers! To earn student recognition and respect, it is necessary for course teachers to closely cooperate with class advisors. Sometimes, they can be the “neutralizers” of class advisors who usually play the “bad guy” role which often arouses complaints and resistance from students. By speaking good things about class advisors, course teachers can “neutralize” the hostility and conflicts between class advisors and students. In summary, class advisors and course teachers should “scratch the backs of each other” to ensure class learning is like taking a fish to water.

5. Practice
In conclusion, all of these need administrative support, such as organizing training for “teacher expertise development”, “class advisor competency optimization”, and “course teacher role positioning”. In addition, “staff meetings” and “class advisor meetings” should be regularly held for fluent and real-time communication so as to achieve the anticipated effect.

Blending Christianity with Life Education

1. “Love” as the core
First, it is necessary to define: “What is Christianity?” Although I am not a Catholic, after teaching at a Catholic school for 27 years, Christianity should not be that strange to me. According to my knowledge, “Christianity” can be described as “fraternity”.

2. Active solution with love and patience
“Love” is what sustains humankind. Without love, “as long as it is convenient, simple, and easy” will become the issue of life management. Instead of “active solutions”, saving one’s trouble and being unwilling to make effort to care and help are “passive containment.” Although “passive containment” can make things look peaceful and effective, there is an undercurrent raging behind it to surge and swallow everything at any time.

3. Love never annoys and defies hardship
“Teaching” and “life management” must start with love. It is not only mentioned in Christianity, but is also the basis of personal conduct. We should bear in mind: “Don’t think buds on the tree are none of our business; always take care of them as our own children even they have grown up.” In practice, we should be “faithful and diligent,” not shirk hardships and put the blame on others. When everyone “loves his job, his students, his colleagues, and the school,” what else cannot be solved?

4. Truth of love
There is one last important principle: “love doesn’t mean doting, and respect doesn’t mean indulgence.” Many people who advocate “humane management” often turn out to be “don’t bother me, let them go, and take it easy.” This is dangerous and irresponsible.

5. Practice
How to do it? “Charity sales”, “disaster relief donations”, and “volunteer service” have been a tradition of St. Viator and they should be maintained. In the future, we should spend more efforts on “international humanitarian aid and care” and “visits to domestic special education organizations.” For example, we can form a mission to Swaziland to inspire and influence students so that they can understand the importance of “counting blessings” after “knowing blessings”, and most importantly, we should “give blessings”. After learning the truth of “empathy” and “being considerate” and “paying it forward”, this is realization of “fraternity” and “Christianity.”

School Development Planning

Aggressive Promotion of the Most Urgent Things

1. Rebuilding mutual trust and unity
Mutual trust should be the very first thing to develop among administrative staff, teachers, parents, and students. When anything happens, we should trust others. When there are doubts or defects, check with and talk to the party involved to give an opportunity for them to explain. Do not believe in rumors or be vexed to break unity. In addition, we should hold meetings to explain everything to ease misunderstandings with great patience. When precautions can be taken, do not overlook any opportunities.

2. Reinforcing expertise development and growth
“Lifelong learning” has become a prominent modern topic and no one can stand out of continuing education of expertise. Therefore, organizing training courses for the enhancement of administrative efficiency, teacher expertise optimization, parenting seminars, interschool demonstrations, and international visits are urgent tasks that should be listed as the top foci of school operations.

3. Enforcing student life management
“Discipline and counseling side by side and carrot and stick together” is the best strategy. In addition to severe punishment, we need to educate students the correct attitude and value so as to solve problems from the “heart”. Otherwise, when students feel indignant but not dare to speak out, they will silently take revenge somewhere and sometime, like guerrilla warfare, and there is no way to prevent is. When there are demands, there is progress. When we keep asking students to make corrections, we will soon see significant progress. Rebuilding the attitude: “Let’s guide students, you and I.” is equally important. From class advisors, course teachers, and administrative staff, by upholding the same attitude and standard, students will be unable to compare who is more demanding. In this way, they will naturally obey school rules.

4. Reinforcing environment decoration, maintenance, and education
A good environment can bring good influence. Apart from planning budgets to renew hardware equipment, the decoration around the campus is important. A joyous and scholarly atmosphere can bring spiritual peace and joy. Of course, how to maintain and protect the environment is a part of school education. If we do not treasure things, we will not respect others, and a ruthless and tyrannical mood will arise. Then, it will be difficult for the school to handle it. Therefore, we need to make improvements from our “spirit”, so as to influence the “environment”. By integrating “spirit” with the “environment”, we can build the best atmosphere for living and learning. An old saying goes, “‘the environment’ changes our ‘mind’, and our ‘mind’ can change ‘the environment’”. The inseparability of these two substances is thus understood.

Better Performance for “Life Management” and “Academic Excellence”

1. Closely combining life with learning
Life management and academic excellence never contradict or conflict with each other. Conversely, they complement each other. Strict and impartial life management, being patient to explain to students, and cleverly interacting with them with affection can help to maintain orderly class management, encourage students to study, and thereby improve student performance.
